Palm Springs, Calif. - UIC concluded the second day of play at the Palm Spring Classic against Brigham Young and Cal State Fullerton. Despite getting on the board first, the Flames fell to BYU (8-1) in game one. UIC was then defeated by Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, to close out the day.
Brigham Young 8, UIC 1
Despite notching the first run in the bottom of the first inning, Brigham Young recorded five runs in the fifth to gain the momentum for an 8-1 win.
UIC shortstop Nicole Robinson was one-for-two (.500) with one RBI. Senior Liz Jacoby and junior Mallory Studzinski each notched a hit against BYU.
Courtney Nix-Clark powered the Cougars, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Junior Emi Snow was one-for-three with one run scored and two RBI.
Cougar third baseman Jodi Norton recorded another run in the fourth on a single down the right field line, sending Nix-Clark home.
Whitely ripped an RBI triple to right field in the fifth inning, followed by a Nix-Clark homer in the sixth to give BYU an 8-1 advantage.
Scoreless in the seventh, the Cougars defeated the Flames. Junior Christina Gwyn picks up the win for BYI in the circle, while Sarah Clynes moves to 2-3 on the season.
Cal State Fullerton 3, UIC 0
Cal State Fullerton pitcher Jessica Doucette shutout UIC on Saturday night to earn the team's ninth win on the season, 3-0.
UIC's Sarah Clynes, Liz Jacoby, Brooke Frydendall, Brittany Dixon and Ashlee Ackerman each picked up a hit against the Titans.
Fullerton's Candice Baker and Courtney Martinez were 1-for-2 at the plate.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first for the Titans, Lauren Lupinetti was hit by a pitch, sending Doucette home. Katie Goldhardt then hit a long ball to right field for a sacrifice fly and a 2-0 lead.
Titan Jenna Wheeler added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice bunt to extend their lead to three runs, 3-0.
UIC pitcher Chelsea Fuemmeler moves to 0-4 in the circle and Titan's Doucette earns her third victory on the season.
The Flames conclude tournament play on Sunday with a matchup against Cal Poly at 11:00 a.m. CST
