Palm Springs, Calif. - The UIC softball team fell to Cal Poly, 4-1, in its final contest at the Palm Springs Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Flames now head south for the UTC Frost Tournament on March 2-5, where they will face four Tennessee-area schools and Austin Peay.
UIC's Nicole Robinson was 1-for-2 with one RBI against the Mustangs. Sophomores Sarah Clynes and Melisaa Marinacci each notched a hit for the Flames, while Clynes earned UIC's sole run scored.
Cal Poly Senior Jackie Gerkhe-Jones was 3-for-3 with a solo home run and one RBI. Lisa Modglin was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Modglin started the Mustangs off in the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field. After Modglin stole second base, junior Sarah Iwata hit an RBI single to left field for a 1-0 lead.
Modglin added a run for Cal Poly in the second on an RBI double to left field, sending Jessica Rogers home.
UIC answered in the top of the third to cut the lead to one run, 2-1. With the bases loaded, shortstop Robinson ripped an RBI single to left field.
The Mustangs attacked in the bottom-half of the inning on a successful double steal that resulted in a run, followed by a Gerhke-Jones homer to left field in the sixth for a two-run advantage.
Freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler replaced Clynes in the circle for the Flames.
Cal Poly held UIC in the top of the seventh for the win (4-1).
Junior Robyn Kontra earns the win in the circle. Fanning five players in 5.1 innings, Clynes fall to 2-4 overall.
