Softball Splits Against Youngstown State On Saturday

Chicago, Ill. - UIC softball split in a doubleheader against Youngstown State (6-6, 1-1) on its opening day of Horizon League action on Saturday afternoon at Flames Field. The Flames (11-20, 1-1) wrap up the three-game series against the Penguins on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

In two games, senior Liz Jacoby posted a team-high .500 batting average (3-for-6) with two doubles. Freshman Brooke Frydendall and junior Nicole Robinson each posted a .333 batting average (2-for-6). Robinson totaled one double and one RBI against the Penguins.

Sophomore Sarah Clynes picked up one run, one RBI and her first triple of the season. Junior Lauren Brennan tabbed her first win in the circle on the season in game two against Youngstown State.

Youngstown State 6, UIC 0

Youngstown State's Katie Burnell (5-1) picked up the win in the circle, while Clynes moves to 9-10 on the season.

Junior Ashlee Ackerman, Jacoby and Frydendall each notched a hit against the Penguins.

McKenzie Bedra was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one home run. Autumn Grove was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lacy Bronson was 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI.

The Penguins attacked first in the top of the first inning. Bronson doubled down the left field line, sending Becky Hibner home (1-0). Bedra then belted a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Bronson was hit by a pitch. Grove gave the Penguins a 6-0 advantage on a double to left center.

UIC 3, Youngstown State 1

Brennan notched her first win of the season in the circle, while YSU's Danielle Chase fell to 0-3.

Robinson was 2-for-3 with one RBI against the Penguins. Clynes was 1-for-3 with one run and the winning RBI in the bottom of the third inning. Jacoby was 2-for-3 and Frydendall tabbed two hits in game two.

Grove was 2-for-2 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.

Scoreless for two innings, Becky Moran drew a walk to kick off the bottom of the third inning. Clynes then ripped a triple to left field, followed by a throwing error from the YSU third baseman to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.

YSU's Grove answered in the top of the fourth inning on a solo shot over the left field fence to cut UIC's lead to one run (2-1).

UIC added cushion in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double to left field from Robinson (3-1).
