Chicago, Ill. - UIC softball wrapped up a three-game series against Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon with a 13-9 victory at Flames Field. Sophomore Sarah Clynes led the Flames with a .750 batting average (3-for-4). Clynes totaled three runs, three RBI and notched her second home run on the season.

Replacing Clynes in the circle after two innings, freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler totaled seven strikeouts in five innings to move her overall record to 2-10 on the season.

Senior Liz Jacoby picked up her 14th career home run versus YSU. Jacoby was 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI. Freshman Brooke Frydendall was 2-for-4 with two hits and three RBI. Junior Brittany Dixon was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI on the afternoon.

The Penguins were paced by Kristen McDonnell with a .500 batting average. McDonnell was 2-for-4 with a grand slam.

Youngstown State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from McKenzie Bedra.

UIC answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on two hits. With the bases loaded, Clynes scored on an error by the second baseman. YSU shortstop Allyse Ledford then committed a throwing error to second base, sending Frydendall and Jacoby home for 3-1 lead.

The Penguins responded with five runs in the top of the second on a grand slam by McDonnell and a solo homer from Autumn Grove.

The Flames lit up the score board in the bottom of the second with seven runs on eight hits. Dixon singled between the third basemen and shortstop, followed by a two-run homer to center field from Clynes (6-5).

With Ashlee Ackerman and Jacoby on the corners, Frydendall picked up her third career home run with a three-run blast to left field. Becky Moran then doubled to left center, followed by an RBI single up the middle by Melissa Marinacci. Dixon singled to left center, sending Marinacci home and giving the Flames a 10-6 lead.

Fuemmeler replaced Clynes in the circle for the Flames in the top of the third inning.

YSU's Jamie Fornal cut the deficit to three runs on a sacrifice fly to left field (10-7). Youngstown State threatened in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and only one out, but Fuemmeler notched two key strikeouts to end the inning.

Leading the Flames in home runs this season, Jacoby belted a two-run rocket to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning, 12-7.

Youngstown State tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ledford to left field (12-8).

With two on base in the bottom of the sixth, Clynes ripped a double to right field for a 13-8 UIC advantage.

The Penguins made a last attempt in the bottom of the seventh, tacking on one run on an RBI double from Fornal, 13-9.

UIC hosts Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 3 at Flames Field. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
