Softball Sweeps Detroit In Doubleheader On Saturday

Chicago, Ill. - Batting .483 in two games, the UIC softball team (15-25, 5-3) swept Detroit (9-21, 1-7) in a doubleheader at Flames Field on Saturday. The Flames defeated the Titans, 12-6, in game one, followed by a 14-4 triumph in six innings to complete the sweep.

Freshman Brooke Frydendall was 6-for-7 with three doubles, three runs scored and six RBI in two games. Sophomore Melissa Marinacci also posted a stellar performance at the plate with a .667 batting average.

Marinacci totaled three runs, one double and two RBI against the Titans. Junior Ashlee Ackerman was 4-for-6 with a team-best five runs, one double and three RBI. Sophomore Sarah Clynes posted a .600 batting average with four runs, two doubles, four RBI and a three-run homer.

Junior Brittany Dixon was 4-for-7 at the plate with five runs, two doubles and three RBI against Detroit in the doubleheader.

UIC 12, Detroit 6

UIC batted .437 versus Detroit to top the Titans, 12-6, in game one of the Saturday's doubleheader. With the win, Clynes moves to 11-13 in the circle on the season, while Detroit's Kelli Short falls to 4-9.

Clynes was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Ackerman was 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Frydendall was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Marinacci was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Detroit's Sarah Dickey was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. Adrienne Baran was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

The Titans grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Rafter's tenth home run on the year in the top of the first inning.

UIC answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on three hits.

Detroit took a 4-3 advantage in the top of the second inning on an RBI double to left field from Erica Houthoofd, followed by and two-run RBI triple by Dickey.

The Flames regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two on base, Ackerman doubled, sending Dixon home to tie it up at 4-4.

Titan pitcher Jill Perry replaced Kelli short in the circle. Jacoby then grounded out for an RBI, followed by an RBI double from Frydendall to extend the lead to two runs (6-4).

UIC added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch from Perry, sending Frydendall home.

Baran cut UIC's lead to three runs (8-5) on homer over the right field fence in the top of the fifth.

The Flames continued to dominate at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs on five hits. Jacoby picked up her second RBI on a single up the middle. With the bases loaded, Frydendall drew the walk to send Ackerman home. Robinson drilled an RBI double, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Marinacci to give the Flames a 12-5 lead.

UIC held the Titans to one run in the top of the seventh to move to 4-3 in Horizon League action.

UIC 14, Detroit 4 (6 innings)

UIC completed the sweep on Saturday with a 14-4 triumph over Detroit in game two. Clynes drilled a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the victory.

Clynes was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Frydendall was 4-for-4 with four RBI. Marinacci was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Dixon was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.

UIC freshman Chelsea Fuemmeler picked up her third win of the season in the circle to move her over record to 3-12.

Detroit's Rafter was 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI and one home run. Liebner was 1-for-2 with one run, two RBI and one homer.

Detroit notched the first run of the game on an RBI double by Baran in the top of the first inning.

UIC responded in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead. Jacoby sent Ackerman home from first base on a double deep to left field to tie it up at 1-1. Frydendall then ripped a ball to left field for the 2-1 advantage.

After Mallory Studzinski reached on a fielder's choice, Dixon drilled an RBI double to left field. Clynes then stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI double deep to center field for a 4-1 lead. Frydendall picked up her second double of the contest to give the Flames a five-run lead (6-1) with two RBI.

Dixon tacked on a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double, sending Marinacci home.

Detroit cut the deficit to three runs on a two-run homer from Liebner and a solo shot over the right field fence from Rafter, marking her second homer on the day.

UIC added two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Ackerman. The Flames ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on an error from the Titan left fielder, followed by a three-run homer from Clynes for the 14-4 victory.

The finale of this weekend's three-game series is set for a 12:00 p.m. at Flames Field on Sunday, April 22.
