Softball Suffers Setback In League Tournament Against Wright State

Cleveland, Ohio - UIC softball (20-32) suffered a setback in the 2007 Horizon League Tournament after falling in the semifinals to Wright State, 4-3 on Friday night at Vikings Field. Despite an early 3-0 lead, the Raiders (24-33) tied the game in the fourth and took a one-run advantage in the top of the sixth.

UIC plays No. 2 Cleveland State on Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 a.m. in the consolation bracket.

Wright State pitcher Jamie Perkins picks up the win in the circle to move her overall record to 9-20. UIC's Sarah Clynes completed her second game on the day, totaling eight strikeouts in 19 innings. Clynes has pitched 26 innings in the last 32 hours.

UIC freshman Brooke Frydendall powered UIC at the plate with three hits, one run and one RBI. Sophomore Melissa Marinacci was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double. Clynes, freshman Stephanie Chavez and juniors Nikki Rogers, Brittany Dixon and Ashlee Ackerman each tabbed a hit against the Raiders. Ackerman and Dixon picked up one run scored apiece.

Perkins was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one double for the Raiders. Jacqueline Macy was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Malerie Klingler was 2-for-3 with one run. Allison Cox was 1-for-2 with one run. Kristen Bradshaw was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

UIC got things started offensively in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on three hits. Dixon reached first base on an error by the Wright State shortstop, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Clynes.

Ackerman then slapped at hit between the third baseman and shortstop. Frydendall ripped an RBI single into right center and advanced to second base on the throw to home plate. Marinacci then drilled a two-run RBI double in the gap to right center for the 3-0 advantage.

Wright State answered in the top of the fifth inning to knot it up at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Michelle Logan grounded out to the second baseman for an RBI. Bradshaw then hit a two-run RBI double to left field.

The Raiders took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Macy to right field, sending Perkins home.

Wright State held the Flames in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh to advance to the championship game on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 a.m. CST.
