Chicago, Ill. - A second-half surge helped guide the UIC women's basketball team to a 63-59 victory over Canisius on Tuesday night at the Pavilion.
Head coach Lisa Ryckbosch reached another milestone her career, becoming UIC's all-time winningest coach with 90 victories in seven seasons.
Four players UIC (2-0) scored in double figures with Briana Hinkle leading the pack with 15 points. Jessie Miller was one point shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Meghan Hutchens was solid offensively with 14 points, including a team-best two treys.
"Hutch really got us going, but everyone shared in the comeback," said Ryckbosch. "Even though we had some bad possessions, we are really excited about the win."
Marie Warner led Canisius with 15 points. Amanda Cavo and Micayla Drysdale each totaled five boards on the night.
Trailing by nine points with 9:04 on the clock in the second half, UIC turned up the heat and cut the deficit to three points with three unanswered buckets. The Golden Griffins (1-3) briefly regained a five-point advantage before UIC went on an 8-1 run to take its first lead of the game (58-56).
The Golden Griffins responded with a three-pointer, but the Flames rallied in the final minute to capture the come-from-behind victory.
In the first half, Canisius sparked a 6-1 run halfway through the frame to take a four-point lead (11-19). The Flames answered with a quick jumper from Hinkle in their next possession, but the Golden Griffins drained four straight three-pointers to take an 11-point advantage.
Canisius lead by as much as 15 points late in the half before UIC put together a short run to trail by 10 (32-22) heading into the intermission. The Golden Griffins shot 48 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point land in the first 20 minutes of play.
UIC is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 30 at the Pavilion when they host SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m.
