Josh Mayo Named Horizon League Player Of The Week

Dec. 8, 2008

Chicago, Ill.- UIC senior guard Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 7, the league office announced on Monday, Dec. 8.

Mayo averaged 26.0 ppg on 54.5 percent (18-for-33) shooting from the field and a blistering 76.5 percent (13-for-17) clip from three-point range in a pair of UIC victories last week.

On the road against SEC power Vanderbilt on Dec. 3, Mayo scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Flames to a 74-55 win over the Commodores. The senior guard hit 11 of his 20 field goal attempts, including a career-high eight three-pointers to come up just one trey shy of the Memorial Gymnasium record for successful three-point attempts in a single game.

Against Loyola on Dec. 6, Mayo scored a team-high 22 points and nailed five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc in the Flames' Horizon League-opening 83-69 win over the crosstown rival Ramblers at the UIC Pavilion.

Mayo leads the Horizon League in scoring with an average of 21.0 ppg to pace the Flames' league-best scoring offense (72.9 ppg). He also sits atop the league rankings for field goal percentage (51.6%) and three-point field goals made (27 total, 3.9 per game).

The honor is the second time this season that Mayo has been honored as the Horizon League's Player of the Week, with his first award of the year coming on Nov. 24. This is also the fifth Horizon League Player of the Week award of Mayo's career.

Mayo and the Flames, who are riding a four-game winning streak, have the week away from game action for final exams and return to the court this Sunday, Dec. 14 to take on Georgia Tech inside Alexander Memorial Coliseum in Atlanta at 1 p.m. Central.
