Bloomington, Ind. - The UIC softball team swept day one of the IU Classic with a 3-0 victory over host Indiana on Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind.
Nicole Robinson led the Flames with two hits and one RBI. Melissa Marinacci and Mallory Studzinski each notched an RBI and one hit apiece.
Carly DeMarco (3-3) recorded her first shutout of the season. The freshman fanned three batters in 7.0 innings pitched.
Scoreless for three innings, Ackerman got things started for the Flames after reaching first base on a throwing error in the top of the fourth. Robinson drove in Ackerman on a single to right center for a 1-0 lead.
Ackerman was the spark in top of the sixth inning for UIC. After ripping a single to right center with only one out, Alicia Abbott doubled to right field, sending Ackerman around to third base. Marinacci continued her hot streak at the plate with an RBI single in the gap between first and second base (2-0).
UIC pinch hitter Studzinski hit an RBI double to right center in the top of the seventh inning, giving the Flames a three-run cushion.
Indiana threatened in the bottom-half of the frame, starting off with a single from Brittany Stein.
Pinch hitter Jenni Huddleston then reached first base on a fielder's choice. Indiana loaded the bases after Kelli Ritchison hit a single through the left side, followed by a walk. UIC third baseman Brittany Wilson bobbled a ground ball from IU's Anna Olson, but fired it to first base just in time for the final out.
UIC squares off against Indiana on Saturday at 11 a.m. CST, followed by a 1 p.m. contest against Louisville.
