Clearwater, Fla. - Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, Michigan State battled back to pick up a 7-1 victory over the UIC softball team on Sunday morning in the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.
UIC's (4-14) Sarah Clynes, Alicia Abbott, Brooke Frydendall and Nicole Robinson each notched a hit against the Spartans. Whitney Orellana (0-3) fanned two batters in 3.1 innings pitched.
With the bases loaded in the top of the second inning, Clynes was walked, sending Stephanie Chavez home for the early 1-0 lead.
Michigan State (10-9) took a four-run advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits. Kristen Aidem tied the score on a bunt with the bases loaded. Traci Nicosia then drilled a three-run home run to right field (5-1).
The Spartans added to their cushion in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs on UIC errors.
Nicosia was 2-for-4 with one run and four RBI for Michigan State.
The Flames wrap up the four-day event against East Tennessee State at 10 a.m.
