Evanston, Ill. - Four home runs helped guide No. 12 Northwestern to a 9-1 victory in five innings over the UIC softball team on Tuesday afternoon at Sharon J. Drysdale Field in Evanston, Ill.
Sarah Clynes (11-15) fanned three batters in 3.0 innings pitched. Whitney Orellana replaced Clynes in the circle, totaling two strikeouts.
Brooke Frydendall was 1-for-2, while Brittany Wilson totaled one hit with UIC's lone run scored. Clynes notched the Flames' single RBI on the afternoon.
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the second inning, pinch runner Aly Euler scored on a passed ball from Clynes.
Wilson led off the top of the third inning with a bunt to the left side. Carly DeMarco then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Wilson into scoring position at second base. Wilson advanced to third on a passed ball. Clynes hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, sending Wilson home to knot the game at 1-1.
Nicole Pauly drilled a two-run home run in the bottom-half of the frame to regain the lead for the Wildcats. The designated player, Emily Haug, added a run on a solo shot to centerfield for a 4-1 advantage.
Northwestern's Tammy Williams tacked on a run with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, followed by a one-run homer from Pauly (6-1).
Jordan Wheeler hit an RBI single through the hole on the left side to give the Wildcats a six-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Batts ended the game after five innings on an RBI double down the right field line.
The Flames (18-27) face No. 23 DePaul in a rescheduled contest in Lincoln Park on Thursday, April 24 at 4 p.m.
