Detroit, Mich. - The UIC softball team recorded an 11-0 shutout in five innings against Detroit at Buysse Park on Saturday afternoon to complete the doubleheader sweep.
UIC hurler Whitney Orellana (4-7) totaled five strikeouts in five innings of work.
Sarah Clynes was 2-for-3 with one double, two runs and two RBI. Ashlee Ackerman totaled two hits with three runs and one RBI. Brooke Frydendall was 3-for-4 at the plate. Melissa Marinacci tallied four RBI and picked up her fifth home run of the season.
The Flames totaled 18 hits in game two.
Scoreless after two innings, UIC (20-28, 11-6) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
With runners on second and third, Nicole Robinson singled down the right field line, driving in Clynes and Ackerman.
The Flames exploded on offense in the top of the fourth inning with five runs on eight hits. Clynes drilled an RBI double for a four-run advantage.
Ackerman, Alicia Abbott, Marinacci and Stephanie Chavez each notched an RBI single to give UIC an 8-0 lead.
Clynes tacked on a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single up the middle, sending DeMarco home. Marinacci sealed the victory after five innings when she drilled a three-run homer to right field (11-0).
