Canfield, Ohio - The UIC softball team swept Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at McCune Park in Canfield, Ohio.
The Flames (15-21, 6-1) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning in game one to top the Penguins, 5-2, followed by a 7-2 victory.
UIC and YSU wrap up the three-game set on Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m..
UIC 5, YSU 2
UIC recorded a three-run rally in the top of the seventh to clinch a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State in game one.
Ashlee Ackerman was 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Brittany Dixon was 2-for-2 with one double and one run. Stephanie Chavez picked up her first home run of the season with one run and one RBI.
Sarah Clynes moves to 9-11 in the circle with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. YSU's Danielle Chase falls to 3-7 overall.
The Penguins (5-17, 2-5) took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Katy Potokar was hit by a pitch, McKenzie Bedra hit a rocket to right center for a 1-0 advantage. Jamie Fornal followed with an RBI double down the left field line to extend YSU's lead to two runs.
The Flames cut the deficit in half (2-1) in the top of the third on a slap hit to the right side from Ackerman, sending Dixon home. Dixon reached second on a double deep to right field.
Chavez knotted up the game for UIC with a leadoff home run to left center in the top of the fifth inning. Christie Seddon replaced Dixon in left field after the senior suffered an injury running to first base in the top of the inning.
The Flames got things started in the top of the seventh with two straight hits. Chavez moved the runners over on an out to second base.
Pinch hitter Mallory Studzinksi hit a ball to left field that was bobbled and dropped, allowing Marinacci to cross home plate for a 3-2 advantage. Seddon then ripped an RBI single up the middle, driving in Brooke Frydendall. With the bases load, Chase walked Ackerman for a three-run lead (5-2).
UIC 7, YSU2
UIC recorded another impressive performance at the plate in game two for a 7-2 triumph. The Flames posted a .366 batting average (11-for-30) with four doubles.
Flames' hurler Whitney Orellana notched her second win of the season in the circle.
Abbott was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Robinson and Frydendall each picked up two RBI.
The Flames picked up where they left off with three runs to start the second game. Clynes hit a single up the middle, followed by a bunt by Ackerman to put runners on first and second. Alicia Abbott drove in Ackerman and Clynes on an RBI double to left center. Nicole Robinson capped the inning with an RBI double down the left field line for a 3-0 lead.
With the bases loaded Frydendall hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to add to UIC's three-run cushion in the top of the third.
YSU notched its first run of the game in the bottom-half of the frame on an RBI double down the left field line from Kristin Bair. Fornal got the Penguins within two runs on a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Robinson hit an RBI line drive to centerfield, sending Abbott home after drilling a double to left field in the fifth. Frydendall added a second run on a line drive over the head of YSU second baseman Autumn Grove, followed by a sacrifice fly from Chavez (7-2).
