Canfield, Ohio - The UIC softball team totaled 19 hits in the series finale against Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon to complete the three-game series sweep with a 17-2 triumph.
UIC (17-21, 7-1) hurler Sarah Clynes picked up her tenth win of the season, striking out three batters and allowing four hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Clynes broke the single-game school record with five hits. The junior totaled three runs, six RBI and one home run. Brittany Wilson was 3-for-4 with four runs and one RBI.
Scoreless after two innings, Clynes led off the third with a solo shot to right center for a one-run advantage (1-0).
With one out in the top of the fourth, Wilson reached first base on a bunt. Carly DeMarco advanced Wilson to second on an error by YSU pitcher Danielle Chase. Clynes drove in Wilson on a double down the right field line.
Ackerman ripped a fly ball just short of the wall in right center, sending two more runners across home plate. Nicole Robinson finished out the inning with an RBI single for a 5-0 lead.
Clynes drove in two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a double to center field.
YSU's Mckenzie Bedra stole Clynes' perfect game in the bottom-half of the frame with a short single to right field in the bottom of the fifth. Jamie Fornal hit a ball in right center, followed by a hard grounder to the left side from Bethany Hafley to load the bases.
Kim Klonowski got Youngstown State on the board on a fielder's choice. Becky Hibner kept the inning going for the Penguins with an RBI single to center field (7-2).
The Flames lit up the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with 10 runs, ripping six straight hits to earn the series sweep.
The Flames were just two hits shy of tying the single-game school record of 21.
UIC faces Notre Dame in a rescheduled home game on Tuesday, April 9 at 5:30 p.m. The original contest was postponed on March 27 due to inclement weather.
The Flames then head to Lincoln Park to battle nationally-ranked DePaul on Thursday, April 10 at 4 p.m.
