Chicago, Ill. - The UIC softball team fell to Wright State in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Flames fell in heartbreaking fashion, 5-3, to open the three-game set in nine innings. Wright State scored five runs in the final two innings of game two to seal a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.
Wright State 5, UIC 3 (9 innings)
UIC was unable to recover after an error resulted in two runs in top of the ninth inning, falling to Wright State, 5-3.
Sarah Clynes (13-16) totaled six strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched.
Clynes was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs. Alicia Abbott totaled two hits with one RBI.
Wright State's Justine Shilt singled down the right field line in the top of the first inning, driving in Jherica Williams.
UIC evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom-half of the frame with an RBI single to right field from Melissa Marinacci.
The Raiders regained the lead in the second on a single through the right side by Michelle Logan. Williams drilled a solo home run in the third.
Clynes drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Ashlee Ackerman grounded out, advancing Clynes to second base. Abbott hit an RBI double to cut UIC's deficit to one run.
With runners on second and third base in the fifth, Brooke Frydendall knotted the game with an RBI ground out to the Wright State shortstop.
In extra innings, Wright State scored a pair of unearned runs on a dropped fly ball from leftfielder Carly DeMarco in the top of the ninth.
Wright State 7, UIC 1
Wright State totaled five runs late in the game to help guide the team to a 7-1 victory over the Flames in game two.
Frydendall was 2-for-3 at the plate. Whitney Orellana falls to 5-8 in the circle for the Flames.
Designated player Allison Cox ripped a line drive solo home run over the fence to left center to give Wright State the early lead in the first inning.
Jamie Perkins added to WSU's advantage with an RBI double off the wall in right center, driving in Logan.
After DeMarco reached first base on a fielder's choice, Clynes hit a double to get UIC on the board.
Wright State took a 4-1 lead on a two-run home run from Cox in the top of sixth. Williams tabbed her 16th homer of the season and second of the game in the seventh. The Raiders tacked on two more runs before the innings was complete.
The Flames battle in their final regular season game on Sunday at noon in the series finale against Wright State.
Senior Day will be celebrated before the contest.
