Oct. 13, 2008
October is in full swing, and UIC Athletics has plenty of successful storylines to share:
MEN'S SOCCER
The UIC men's soccer team recently wrapped up a school-record start to a season, staying unbeaten for an unprecedented 12 consecutive games (8-0-4). The Flames, currently ranked seventh in the nation by Soccer America and registering a ranking as high as No. 4 in the country this season, recently hosted 2007 national runner-up Ohio State in an exciting 0-0 draw in front of 2,438 fans, the largest crowd to ever witness a UIC men's soccer home game (see photos of the game by clicking here). UIC also received national attention from ESPN this week.
VOLLEYBALL
The UIC volleyball team is heading down the home stretch of its season, and after narrowly falling in heart-stopping five-set thrillers against Loyola and Milwaukee, the Flames knocked off a strong Valparaiso team on the road in five sets on October 11. Eight of UIC's last 11 matches are at home before the team embarks on the Horizon League Championship in Cleveland, Ohio.
CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country season is winding down, and the Flames are headed to the Horizon League Championships on Nov. 1 in Green Bay, Wis. with sights set squarely on finishing at the top of the conference.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The UIC men's basketball team was predicted to finish third in the annual Horizon League Preseason Poll that was released on Oct. 7. Two days later senior guard Josh Mayo was named the 2008-09 Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, the first time a Flames player has been given that honor since Cedrick Banks earned his second straight Preseason POY prior to the 2004-05 campaign. Mayo was also named to the Preseason All-League First Team, while teammate Scott VanderMeer was a Preseason All-League Second Team pick.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Junior guard Jessie Miller represented the UIC women's basketball team on the 2008-09 Preseason All-Horizon League Women's Basketball Team, garnering an all-league second team selection.
