Chicago, Ill.- UIC junior goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja (Belgrade, Serbia/VI Belgrade) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the period ending September 21, the league office announced on Monday.
Bubonja turned in two clean sheets over the weekend. He made four saves and a variety of key plays that eliminated opposing scoring threats throughout the match in the Flames' 2-0 win over Princeton on Sept. 19, and two days later he stopped three shots on target and kept a solid Loyola Marymount side off the scoreboard for 110 minutes in a 0-0 draw.
Since allowing five goals in UIC's first two matches, Bubonja has only given up a meaningless last-minute penalty-kick goal in the last five contests.
Bubonja and the Flames, ranked seventh in today's Soccer America Top 25 poll, will open Horizon League play this Friday against Cleveland State at Flames Field beginning at 7 p.m.
