Chicago, Ill. - Taking to the water competitively for the first time since Nov. 23, the UIC men's and women's swimming and diving team split its dual meet with Horizon League rival Green Bay on Saturday at the UIC Natatorium.

The men's team topped the Phoenix, 144-98, snapping Green Bay's five-meet winning streak. The women's team, meanwhile, was unable to overtake the four-time defending league champion Phoenix, which rolled to a 164.50-72.50 triumph to remain undefeated in dual meet action this season.

The UIC men's team's performance was highlighted by rookie Zach Van Swol setting the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.90. He broke the previous mark of 9:35.92 set by Kevin Pickard in 1994.

All in all, the men's team won eight events against Green Bay, including the 400-yard medley and the 400-yard freestyle relays.

Freshman Luke Martinez took top honors in a pair of individual events, winning the 400 IM (4:03.90) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.96). Cameron Seebeck (50 free/21.18), Will Ikeda (200 breast/2:07.32), Steve Yemm (200 fly/1:51.67) and Andy Peterson (200 back/1:57.30) were the Flames' other individual event winners.

The UIC women's team, which was hampered by illness to several key contributors, started strong as the relay team of Clair Martin, Sarah Walsh, Kayla Redig and Sarah Harper just missed the school record 400-yard medley relay time of 3:57.93 with their time of 3:57.97.

Redig would come back to win the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.14, while Martin gave the women's team its other event title, taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.13.

The UIC men's and women's swimming and diving team will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 24, when they travel to meet Valparaiso at 1 p.m.
