CHICAGO- The UIC men's soccer team and Valparaiso battled to a 0-0 draw at Flames Field on Halloween night.
The Flames (6-4-6, 3-1-2 Horizon League) extended their unbeaten streak to five matches and posted their fourth clean sheet in that span.
"A tough Horizon League game," said UIC head coach John Trask. "Compliments to [Valpo head coach] Mike Avery and his coaching staff. They have a good team.
"A fair result and we move on to a big game against Butler."
Valparaiso (8-6-2, 3-2-2 Horizon League) created a couple of chances early, including a shot by Steve Shively in the 13th minute that was stopped by a leaping Jovan Bubonja in an incredible display of goalkeeping. Bubonja was able to get his hand on the ball and tip it over the crossbar.
The Flames cultivated a few opportunities after intermission, but regulation ended with neither team lighting the scoreboard.
UIC had its best chance in the 108th minute, when a cross into the box was kicked toward frame by a sliding Kevin Stoll. Keeper Ryan Schwarz was able to make the save, and the rebound found the boot of Phillip Mitchell, who attempted to force it into the net as he stood in front of goal but was prevented from scoring by two fallen Valpo defenders.
Bubonja made four saves during the evening to record his sixth shutout of the season.
UIC celebrated its seven seniors prior to kick-off. Bubonja, Mitchell, Ian Sarachan, Zach Tierney, Mike Giffin, Paul Kopec and Charlie Trout were honored for their contributions.
The Flames host Horizon League rival Butler at Flames Field this Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in UIC's home regular season finale.
