CHICAGO - The UIC softball team blew away Detroit in a 8-0, five inning victory on a blustery Friday night at Flames Field.
While the winds were blowing at 21 mph and gusting up to 33, the Flames (13-20, 5-1 Horizon) stayed hot at the plate, accruing 12 hits in the contest.
With a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, UIC knocked the game wide open, starting with Brooke Frydendall's third triple of the season to open the inning.
The next batter, Shannon Kehr, drove Frydendall in with a left-field double for her sixth RBI of her freshman campaign. Hits to the outfield from Ashley Hewett, Carly DeMarco and Melinda Macias would continue moving runners home for three in the inning for a four-run Flames lead.
After keeping the Titans (10-24, 3-9 Horizon) hitless after the third inning, UIC closed out the game in the fifth after Frydendall drove home Stephanie Chavez, and Melissa Marinacci hit her third home run of the season to go up 7-0.
Christie Seddon put a cap on the evening in the cold with a left field RBI double that brought in the eighth and final run of the contest. The sophomore would go one-for-one with a pair of RBI.
Hewett struck out seven in her three-hitter for her sixth win of the season (6-7). The Flames return to the field for a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
Tomorrow's contest will serve as Alumni day, and at the conclusion of game two, seniors Marinacci and Sarah Clynes will be honored as part of senior day.
