KANSAS CITY - The UIC men's soccer team battled host UMKC to a scoreless draw through nearly 60 minutes, but the Kangaroos' Zachary Balthazar tallied the game-winner at the 58:50 mark, leading to a 1-0 victory over the Flames at Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field Tuesday night.
The Flames nearly had two scoring chances during a 12-minute span mid-way through the second half, but both Derek Huffman and Eric Frazier hit the post on their respective scoring chances. In his second career start, UIC back-up goalkeeper Piotr Kikloski recorded five saves.
"Piotr (Kikloski) played a great game tonight, but as has been the theme with our team as of late, we didn't attack the way we needed to when the game was still tied," said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. "We really got after it after they (UMKC) scored, but it was too little, too late. Against a quality team like UMKC, you've got to put together a complete game, and maintain focus for 90 minutes. That was the story tonight in a tough loss."
The Kangaroos held a slight 11-10 edge on shots, and booted eight corner kicks to UIC's three. Ivan Stanisavljevic led the Flames with four shots, while Frazier took three. Two of Stanisavljevic's shots were on goal.
UIC (4-9, 1-4 Horizon) will continue its road swing this Saturday (Oct. 23), when the Flames take on Horizon League rival Milwaukee at Engelmann Field beginning at 7 p.m. The Panthers will take on host Oakland, also of the Summit League, on Wednesday afternoon.
