MILWAUKEE - Junior midfielder Derek Huffman tallied the game's lone goal with less than six minutes remaining (1:04:18) in double overtime, securing a pivotal 1-0 win for the UIC men's soccer team over host Milwaukee in a Horizon League battle at Engelmann Field Saturday night.
Huffman's goal, his fifth in the last six games, was assisted by Joe Radice and Eric Frazier. After Radice and Frazier's touch passes, Huffman directed the shot to the far post from the top of the 18-yard box. The win sealed the Flames' second road victory in Horizon League play.
Dating back to the 2006 season, UIC has now rolled off six-straight wins over the Panthers by way of a shutout. The Flames are 7-1-2 versus Milwaukee in the past 10 meetings. It marked the first overtime contest between UIC and Milwaukee since the 2005 campaign.
"As is usually the case when we play Milwaukee, it came down to one team making a play to win the game tonight, and our credit goes to our guys for staying aggressive in the overtime periods," said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. "We also did a nice job preventing Milwaukee from making one of those plays, so it was a great team victory. They are a great team, and it was a great environment for college soccer tonight.
"Road wins in conference play are always tough to come by, but what makes this win even more special is that we got some valuable points to stay in the Horizon League Tournament race. On the overtime goal, our guys really executed. Eric (Frazier) and Joe (Radice) combined on a couple of great passes, and Derek (Huffman) had a solid finish."
UIC goalkeeper Steve Purdy preserved his third shutout of the season in the game, making seven saves, including six in the second half. The Flames were opportunistic down the stretch, taking four shots in the combined overtime periods.
Huffman's goal marked his eighth of the season, and stretched his season point total to 18. Frazier's assist was his second in the past three games, and sealed his tenth point of the campaign.
Frazier took a team-high two shots in the game, while Huffman, Ivan Stanisavljevic, Radice, Zach Kaleta, Alex Rickett and Tim Walsh each recorded one shot.
UIC (5-9, 2-4 Horizon) will return home for its non-conference home finale Tuesday (Oct. 26), when the Flames host Eastern Illinois beginning at 7 p.m.
