MADISON, Wis. - The UIC men's soccer team battled host Wisconsin to a scoreless draw through 95 minutes, but the Badgers' Joey Tennyson scored five minutes into overtime, securing a 1-0 win over the Flames in their non-conference finale at the McClimon Complex Wednesday night.
Tennyson's goal came on assists from Colin Mani and Paul Yonga. The setback ended UIC's four-game winning streak, a stretch that included back-to-back road wins. The Flames will now turn their attention to a pivotal home match against crosstown rival Loyola at Flames Field on Saturday night. With a win, UIC will secure a spot in the six-team postseason Horizon League Tournament.
"It took us some time to get our legs tonight, but after we did, we created some offensive chances," said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. "Unlike the past three games, where we converted those opportunities, we weren't able to put one in the back of the net tonight.
"Wisconsin is a much better team than their record indicates, and John Trask is doing a great job getting that program turned around. It was a great opportunity for our guys to step out of Horizon League play, compete against a Big Ten team, and get ready for our most important game of the season Saturday night against Loyola."
The Flames recorded 10 shots in the game, and also carded eight corner kicks. Sophomore Joe Radice took a team-high four shots, while Zach Kaleta added two. Eric Frazier, Alex Rickett, Paul Tracy and Drew Wolfe each added one shot for the Flames. Senior goalkeeper Steve Purdy had four saves, including two in overtime.
UIC (7-10, 3-4 Horizon) currently sits one-half game behind Loyola (3-10-2, 3-3-1 Horizon) in the Horizon League standings. If the Flames defeat the Ramblers Saturday night in the regular season finale, they will advance to the conference tournament. A Loyola win or tie would eliminate UIC from contention. Kickoff from Flames Field is set for 7 p.m.
