Luis Gonzaga Named Horizon League Player Of The Week

CHICAGO - UIC men's tennis standout Luis Gonzaga has been named the Horizon League Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending February 22nd, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Gonzaga, a native of Sorocaba, Brazil, went 3-0 in singles play over the weekend. He posted wins at No. 3 singles against Bradley (6-2, 6-3), Villanova (6-3, 6-3), and UMKC (3-6, 7-6 (4), 12-10).

Gonzaga, a junior, fought off six match points in his win over UMKC's Serge Ristivojevic. The Brazilian took set two in tiebreaker fashion, 7-6 (4), after losing the first set and coming back to take the third set, 12-10.

Gonzaga also paired with teammate Bastian Harbo at No. 1 doubles to register an 8-3 win at Bradley and another 8-2 victory at Villanova.

The Flames will take the court again on Saturday when head coach Hans Neufeld goes for his 100th career win as UIC hosts Southern Illinois at the Hinsdale Racquet Club. The action starts at 6:00 p.m.
