CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team could not hold a 12-point second-half deficit on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Loyola Ramblers, 67-64.
Abby Skube made a lay-up with 28 seconds left to play to give Loyola (14-13, 8-8) a one-point lead, 65-64. With the shot clock turned off, UIC (12-15, 9-7) brought the ball up the floor and elected not to call a timeout. Freshman Taylor Foulks fired off a three-pointer from the top of the key with 13 seconds to go. Her attempt drew iron and the rebound was hauled down by the Ramblers' Maggie McCloskey, who was immediately fouled by Jessie Miller.
McCloskey, who has not missed a free throw all season, sank a pair to give Loyola a 67-64 advantage.
The Flames advanced the ball and this time it was Miller who hoisted a three-pointer. Her shot didn't fall and Skube got the rebound; she was fouled by Foulks with four seconds to play, but missed the free throw. Miller got the rebound, but all she could muster was a desperation half-court heave.
The game started out well for the Ramblers, as they raced out to a 13-4 lead on the strength of a trio of three-pointers from McCloskey.
UIC tightened things up defensively and following a three-pointer by Foulks with three seconds left in the opening frame, found themselves up by eight at the break, 31-23.
The Flames extended the lead to 12 with 16:44 left in the game, but McCloksey and Skube got the Ramblers right back in the game.
Loyola shot 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from beyond the arc in the game.
McCloskey scored a game-high 23 points including seven treys. Skube also added a career-high 17 points in the win.
Jasmine Bailey led the Flames with 19 points and nine rebounds. Foulks finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists in 38 minutes of action.
UIC will be back on the floor on Thursday night when they host the Butler Bulldogs at the UIC Pavilion. That game will get underway at 7:00 p.m.
