Colangelo is the chair of USA Basketball's Board of Directors and the architect of the United States' resurgence on the international basketball landscape. He led the movement that resulted in the USA Basketball Senior National Team's gold medal performance at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, a story chronicled by author Dan Bickley in the book Return of the Gold.

In addition to his direction of USA Basketball's recent success, Colangelo is well-known for his four-decade involvement with the NBA's Phoenix Suns. He has served in a variety of capacities for the Suns, including general manager, head coach, president, managing general partner, chief executive officer and chairman, since the franchise's inaugural season in 1968.

Colangelo, a native of the "Hungry Hill" neighborhood of Chicago Heights, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004 for his extensive contributions to the game.

He has been involved in a bevy of other sports ventures and organizations and foundations, and his support of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, including his current role as the Hall of Fame's National Leadership Committee Chairman, led to the construction of a new home for the Hall of Fame that was named The Jerry Colangelo Center. The Colangelo Center, located on 1431 West Taylor Street, is between UIC's east and west campuses and stands less than a mile from the UIC Pavilion.
