CHICAGO - In the final contest before the start of Horizon League action, the UIC softball team was shut out at intercity rival DePaul, 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Flames (7-22) faced a venerable pitcher in the Blue Demon's Becca Heteniak, who would fan seven and only surrender a single hit in the contest at Cacciatore Stadium.
Melinda Macias' game-opening infield single would be one of two Flames batters to reach on the afternoon, as Carly DeMarco would reach first off an error on DePaul's shortstop.
UIC's battery held their own against the Blue Demons, as starter Devin Miller would give up six hits and strike out three in four innings of work before Ashley Hewett came in and surrendered a hit in the remaining two innings.
"We knew coming into the season that our schedule would be a challenging one," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "Now we focus on the true test of how we perform within conference play."
The Flames open up Horizon League action against defending tournament champions Cleveland State in Ohio on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. CST.
