CHICAGO - A two-out grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning by Loyola's Angie Funston would be the difference maker in the UIC softball team's 5-1 loss in Roger's Park on Tuesday afternoon.
The Flames (9-27, 2-5 Horizon) met up with the Ramblers (13-14, 5-4 Horizon) at Loyola Softball Park for a single contest this afternoon after last week's originally scheduled series was postponed due to weather. Both sides were scoreless after one as Loyola would strand three in the inaugural frame, but would score first off a home run by secondbasemen Bridget Lally straight over the centerfield wall in the second.
Stephanie Chavez would open the top of the third with a one-out double, followed by a looping centerfield single from Brooke Frydendall to move Chavez to third.
Carly DeMarco would bring Chavez home with an impeccably placed bunt in front of Rambler pitcher Funston for a 1-1 tie.
The fourth inning would mark the turning point of the game, as Loyola would get two on with a pair of singles. With two outs, the Flames would intentionally walk catcher Jenna Grim to load the bases for Funston, who would make strong contact and score four with a grand slam for the go-ahead and eventual final score.
Chavez would go 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of outfield singles and her fifth double of the season. Ashley Hewett would fan four in 3.2 innings of work for the loss in the circle (5-13).
