CLEVELAND - The UIC softball team suffered a 6-1 loss in the finale of the three-game series at Cleveland State on Saturday morning.
The Flames (8-24, 1-2 Horizon) were unable to create the same offensive outburst as was present in Friday's doubleheader, stranding seven on base with only six hits. Gabby Gillilan put the Vikings (21-8, 2-1 Horizon) on the board in the second inning with a solo home run that sailed right along the left field foul pole.
The home team would tack on three more in the third, scoring two runs off of firstbasemen Lia Gordon homer over the center field wall to go up 4-0. A pair of unearned runs in the fourth would round out CSU's offensive production for the contest.
Ashley Hewett's double to right centerfield would prevent UIC from being shutout, driving in Melinda Macias would opened the fifth inning with a walk, and moved to second off of Stephanie Chavez's successful sacrifice bunt.
Both Hewett and Macias would go 2-for-3 on the day, with Hewett surrendering four runs, all of which were earned, off of five hits in 2.1 innings. Devin Miller would close out the remainder of the game, giving up three hits and two runs, both unearned.
UIC remains in Horizon League play this week with a mid-week matchup against intercity foe Loyola in Rogers Park, beginning with a doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 3 p.m.
