2010 UIC Men's Soccer Schedule
CHICAGO- UIC head men's soccer coach Sean Phillips unveiled the Flames' 2010 schedule on Tuesday, June 15, with eight regular-season home dates on tap this fall.
"UIC Soccer is looking forward to the 2010 schedule," said Phillips. "This team will be challenged early by hosting FIU and playing at tournaments hosted by Seattle University and the University of Akron. The games against Gonzaga and Michigan at Seattle and Cincinnati and Northridge at Akron will challenge our new group of core players and prepare us for the Horizon League, which continues to prove it is a nationally-competitive soccer conference. The non-conference schedule is also highlighted by late-season Big Ten non-conference opponents Ohio State and Wisconsin.
"We will continue to challenge ourselves on league, regional and national levels."
The Flames will play two exhibition games, starting with a trip to Notre Dame on Aug. 23 and ending with a home friendly against DePaul on Aug. 27.
2010 officially begins at Flames Field on Friday, Sept. 3. The Flames host Florida International at 8:30 p.m. that day, right after a neutral-site contest between Western Illinois and DePaul on UIC's pitch that begins at 6 p.m. for a city soccer twinbill on the UIC campus.
UIC hits the road for the next two weekends, taking on Gonzaga and Michigan in a tournament hosted by Seattle University from Sept. 10-12 before heading to Akron, Ohio to tangle with Cincinnati and Cal State Northridge in a tournament hosted by the national runner-up Zips from Sept. 17-19.
The Flames return to Chicago for a three-match stay at home, beginning on Sept. 24 with their Horizon League opener against Cleveland State and resuming with a Sept. 26 contest against Detroit. The homestand concludes on Sept. 30 against SIU Edwardsville.
After road games against league rivals Wright State (Oct. 3) and Butler (Oct. 9), UIC hosts Ohio State on Oct. 13. The last time the Flames and the Buckeyes played on UIC's home pitch was in 2008 in front of a record Flames Field crowd.
UIC hosts defending Horizon League champion Green Bay on Oct. 16 before embarking on a two-game swing to UMKC (Oct. 19) and Milwaukee (Oct. 23).
The Flames' home match against Eastern Illinois on Oct. 26 precedes a Halloween road meeting between UIC and Valparaiso. UIC then heads up to Madison, Wis. to take on the Badgers on Nov. 3 before wrapping the regular season on Nov. 6 with the city derby against Loyola at Flames Field.
The Horizon League tournament takes place from Nov. 9-14, with the league's top six teams qualifying for the event. The NCAA tournament, which the Flames have advanced to on three occasions in the last four seasons, begins on Nov. 20 and runs all the way to the College Cup from Dec. 11-13 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
UIC returns veteran senior captain Robert Younger and sophomore standouts Josh Beard, Joe Radice and Ivan Stanisavljevic under the watch of Phillips, who enters his sixth season with the Flames and first as head coach.
