CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's cross country and track and field squads revealed its 2010-11 schedule, head coach Jim Knoedel announced Wednesday.
The 2010 cross country campaign kicks off with the UIC Home Opener on Saturday, Sept. 4th in Palos Hills, Ill. The Flames will welcome Horizon League foes Green Bay and Milwaukee, as well as nearby rivals, Chicago State and St. Xavier for the inaugural meet of the season. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.
On Saturday, October 2nd, UIC will participate in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational at 10:00 a.m. That race features the same course that will be used in the Horizon League Championships later that month on October 30th.
"We're excited for the Lakefront Invitational because it's almost like a home course for us," said Knoedel. "Not only will it familiarize us with a course we'll run for the conference meet, but it's also a chance for a lot of family and friends to come out and support us."
The Flames will also have a chance to run on the course that will be used for the NCAA Regional in Peoria, Ill. before that competition on Nov. 13th. UIC will get a sneak-peak at the track during the Bradley Classic on Friday, Oct. 15th.
"Being able to have some opportunities see the layout of the course for the conference championship and the NCAA Regional ahead of time should be a great advantage for us," said Knoedel.
The indoor track and field campaign begins at a familiar place on Friday, Jan. 14th at the Dick Pond Invitational hosted by Lewis University. UIC will close out January with another pair of familiar meets, the North Central Invitational in Naperville, Ill. on Jan. 21st and the University of Chicago Duals on Jan. 29th.
One new addition to the slate that has Knoedel excited is the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Feb. 5th. "We're bringing the whole team this year," said Knoedel. "We'll see a lot of great competition and I'm hopeful that we'll be able to post some of our top season performances."
Youngstown State will host the 2011 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 26-27. "Youngstown State has a brand-new, beautiful facility that will really showcase the talent from around the conference well," noted Knoedel.
The outdoor schedule begins with a trip to Carbondale, Ill. for the SIU Spring Classic on Saturday, March 26th. "The weather is usually a little bit nicer down there and the meet attracts some top competition," said Knoedel. "We're looking to start the season with some really great performances at SIU."
On Saturday, April 16th, the Flames will participate in the DePaul Invitational in what Knoedel has dubbed a true city meet. The Flames and Blue Demons will be in attendance, along with Loyola, Chicago State and possibly Northwestern. "I'm very excited about this one," said Knoedel. "We'll all have a chance to go head-to-head to see who has the best team in Chicago. It should be a lot of fun for everyone."
Butler University will host the 2011 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis on May 6-8.
