As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics.
CHICAGO - The UIC men's tennis team finished the year with a strong push by winning 13 of its last 18 matches, ending the 2010 campaign with an 18-12 record. The Flames went 5-2 in Horizon League play giving them the second seed for the Horizon League Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
UIC had non-conference wins over the likes of Northern Illinois, Bradley, Villanova, UMKC and Southern Illinois.
Head coach Hans Neufeld recorded his 100th career win on February 27 upon the Flames victory over SIU.
The Flames best win streak of the year was six. As the second seed in the Horizon League Tournament, UIC came up short in the championship match against Cleveland State.
UIC was led by First Team All-Horizon League senior Sebastian Lystad. Lystad finished his career with 74 wins which places him at the top of the all-time career singles win list. The senior was also Horizon League Player of the Week on two occasions.
Junior Flame Luiz Gonzaga finished his 2010 season with an overall record of 18-10 and 6-3 in the Horizon League earning All-Horizon League honors as well.
At the 2010 UIC Academic Night of Champions, Alex Marginean was named one of three male athletes honored as Male Athlete of the year.
UIC opens up the fall season at the River Forest Invitational on Sept. 17. The Flames begin their 2011 campaign at DePaul on Jan. 15.
