BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's cross country team looked to continue to build on early-season successes on Friday afternoon at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship meet hosted by the Illinois State Redbirds.
The men's squad did just that, following up a first-place finish at the UIC Home Opener on Sept. 4 with a third-place finish on Friday. Brian Denk repeated his outstanding effort with an eighth-place overall finish and sixth place out of all collegiate finishers. Denk, who won the Horizon League Runner of the Week following his performance at the Home Opener, ran the course in a time of 25:02. The Darien, Ill. native led the race through the first three miles.
"Brian came out blazing and turned in the race of his life," said UIC head coach Jim Knoedel.
Another group of Flames, Tyler Hinckley, Matt Morse and Sam Kehoe all worked well together to finish 23rd, 27th and 32nd, respectively in the men's event to help earn a top-three finish.
Knoedel was also impressed with freshman Angelos Karkalis who posted a time of 26:24 in his first collegiate race.
Knoedel's men's team finished third with 132 points. Illinois won the event after placing seven runners in the top 10. North Central finished second and was led by the overall top time of 24:23 by Michael Spain.
On the women's side, UIC finished 14th overall as a team. Senior Rosemary Gillam led the group with a strong time of 19:33 in the women's 5K.
Northwestern captured the women's title with four top-ten finishers.
The Flames will be idle until Saturday, Oct. 2 when they compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational which is being held on the same course that will host the Horizon League Championships at the end of October.
