AKRON, Ohio - Eric Frazier's late second-half goal would prove to be the difference-maker as the UIC soccer team outlasted Cincinnati, 1-0 at the University of Akron Tournament on Friday afternoon.

"We put in a great effort, made plays in key moments and found the way to get the positive result," said head coach Sean Phillips. "The team was great in training all week and the improved showed this afternoon."

After taking only one shot in the first, the Flames (1-3-0) would strike in the 72nd minute when Brandon Wallace set up Frazier for a blast to the back post for the squad's first goal of the young season.

"It was great to see Eric get his goal scoring jump-started this season," said Phillips.

"Seniors Nate Downing, Tim Walsh and Brandon gave the team a great lift today," said Phillips. "With Robert Younger keeping the team organized and a few key saves on goal, the defense bent but never broke."

The Bearcats had three successive shots between the 63rd and 68th minute, with two on target as net-minder Steve Purdy would make a trio of saves in the first half before staving off five more in the second for his first Flames shutout.

Derek Huffman and Slobodan Aleksov would attempt to find the goal in the later stages of the contest but were thwarted by Cincinnati's goalkeeper, Matt Williams.

This marks the first loss for the Bearcats this season, moving Cincinnati to a 2-1-2 record.

"While tonight's result is a great step in the right direction, we need to continue to focus on doing the little things right and look towards achieving another positive result on Sunday," said Phillips.

The Flames will close out the weekend against Cal State Northridge on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central. Fans can watch the action for free via a live stream, courtesy Akron Athletics. Registration is required.
