GREEN BAY, Wis. - Senior forward Paul Carter posted his seventh double-double of the season, but the UIC men's basketball team fell behind by double-digits mid-way through the first half and never recovered, dropping a 74-50 decision versus Green Bay at the Resch Center Saturday morning.
Carter scored 11 points and corralled 10 rebounds, securing his fourth double-double during Horizon League play. Senior forward Brad Birton joined Carter in double figures, chipping in 12 points to go along with nine rebounds, including six offensive boards.
Green Bay was led by Rahmon Fletcher, who poured in a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Bryquis Perine (16) and Alec Brown (11) also tallied double-digit scoring outputs.
The Flames (5-14, 0-7 Horizon) were 0-for-12 from three-point range, while Green Bay shot 8-of-20 from beyond the arc. UIC scored 38 points in the paint, but saw the Phoenix score 21 points off turnovers, and out-score the Flames 14-0 through the fast break.
UIC executed its offensive game plan early, successfully delivering the ball into the post five times. But Green Bay converted three-straight field goals while clinging to a 5-4 lead, and opened up a 12-4 advantage less than six minutes into the game (14:04).
Green Bay's lead reached double digits (19-9) after a jumper by Perine with 9:49 remaining in the first half. The Flames could draw no closer than a 10-point deficit for the remainder of the stanza, and saw the Phoenix finish the half on a 5-0 run to take a 42-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
UIC out-scored Green Bay 18-9 over the first 7:38 of the second half, and pulled back within 11 points (51-40) after Birton's third field goal of the second half. But Seth Evans buried back-to-back threes, including one as the shot clock expired, to help the Phoenix stretch their lead to 57-42 with 11:01 remaining.
UIC could draw no closer, eventually falling behind by 20 points (64-44) with 6:37 remaining. Green Bay out-scored the Flames 23-10 over the final 12:22.
UIC will wrap up its three-game road trip next Saturday (Jan. 22), when the Flames travel across town to take on rival Loyola. Tip-off from the Gentile Center is set for 3 p.m. CST.
