CHICAGO - UIC men's tennis senior Luiz Gonzaga was named Horizon League Player of the Week for the period ending Jan 23, the league office announced on Tuesday.
"Luiz is a great team player, and co-captain whose work ethics scholastically and athletically are appreciated and admired," says head coach Hans Neufeld.
The Sorocaba, Brazil native recorded a 2-0 record for the Flames on their home court against University of Chicago Maroons.
Gonzaga notched a win at No. 2 singles, and another one at No. 1 doubles spot. He recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory over his opponent Zsolt Szabo on Saturday Night.
In doubles play, the senior paired up with Alexander Raa to claim an 8-5 win over Troy Brinker and Jan Stefanski.
This is the second time in Gonzaga career he has received this weekly honor.
Gonzaga and the Flames will take on host Western Michigan on Friday at 1 p.m, and then the following day take on host Illinois State starting at 2 p.m.
