CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team won its fourth-straight match Saturday as the squad swept Wright State (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) at the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill. Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led all players as she hammered down 17 kills in the match.
The Flames (11-5/4-1) downed the Raiders squad in straight sets and redshirt junior Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) added 10 kills at a clip of .444.
The Flames started out with a 1-4 deficit to the Raiders, but with back-to-back kills from Safranek and Dismuke the UIC clan quickly earned the lead. Freshman Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) held serve for three of those three points. The squad battled back and forth, before the Flames went on a three-point run to close out the first set in a 25-20 decision.
The Flames came out hot in the second set as the squad gained a 4-0 lead on Wright State. UIC led the Raiders 18-10 and despite Wright State's seven-point run, the Flames clinched the set with a 25-23 score.
In the third set, UIC went on a six-point run, including back-to-back kills from Safranek, while sophomore Justine Garcia (Chicago, Ill./Brooks) held serve for five of the six points. UIC held onto the lead as the team defeated the Raiders 25-23 to secure the match.
The Flames return to action Tuesday in a match against Milwaukee at 7:00 (CT) the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, Wis. Fans can follow live stats and the live videostream, which can be found at UICFlames.com.
