CHICAGO, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball team tallied an exhibition win in its home opener against the University of Chicago on Wednesday night with a final score of 61-45. The Flames executed a balanced offensive attack with four players in double figures.
"I think as a group we did some good things early," said Head Coach Howard Moore. "We tried to throw a bunch of combinations at them and in the first half we really turned up the intensity on defense. We feed off our defense to really get going offensively. "
Junior Gary Talton led all scorers with 14 points while seniors Dorian Tyler, Paris Carter and Daniel Barnes chipped in 10. Talton shot 50 percent from the field (3-6) and 8-of-9 from the charity strip. Tyler was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field with four steals.
"I thought Dorian (Tyler) was tremendous in the first half," said Moore. "He has such a long body to make deflections to give us some opportunities on the offensive end."
Barnes connected on three treys and added five boards and three assists. Carter nearly missed a double-double with seven boards, five of which were offensive.
A big difference was UIC's 28 to 16 points in the paint advantage and its 23 forced turnovers which resulted in 22 Flames' points. UIC also benefited from 15-of-26 from the free throw line compared to Chicago's 2-of-7.
The Flames have one more exhibition game next Tuesday, Nov. 8 at home against Lake Forest beginning at 7:30 p.m. CST. UIC will then open up its regular season at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m.
