Pre-Game Notes 
► UIC will look to capture its first road win Friday, when the Flames travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Flyers beginning at 6 p.m. CST. The Flames are coming off Monday night's 57-56 win over Western Illinois, while the Flyers moved to 8-4 on the season after a 69-64 loss versus visiting Seton Hall on Wednesday.
► The Flames and Flyers will be meeting for the first time in the sport of men's basketball. UIC is 0-7 all-time versus opponents currently affiliated with the Atlantic-10 Conference.
► Three-of UIC's last four road games have been decided by just one possession. While the Flames are 0-3 in those contests, they had opportunities to either tie or win the game with a last second shot in road tilts at Green Bay (12/1/11), Milwaukee (12/3/11) and Central Michigan (12/16/11). The Milwaukee contest ended in a 73-71 overtime setback.
► Friday's contest wraps up the scheduled portion of UIC's non-conference schedule. The Flames will be on the road for the Sears BracketBusters contest on Saturday, Feb. 18 against an undetermined opponent.
► NEXT UP: UIC will resume Horizon League play on Thursday, Dec. 29, when the Flames entertain Detroit at the UIC Pavilion beginning at 7:00 p.m. CST.
THE COACHES
UIC: Howard Moore(Wisconsin, '95) is in his second season as the head coach at UIC, where he has compiled an 11-31 overall record. He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, helping the Badgers to five-straight NCAA tournament berths. Moore, 38, also served assistant coaching stints at Loyola (2004-05), Ball State (2003-04) and Bradley (1999-2003).
Dayton: Ryan "Archie" Miller is in his first season as the head coach at Dayton. Miller, 33, arrived at Dayton from the University of Arizona where he served as Associate Head Coach last season, and helped the Wildcats to a 30-8 record that ended with an Elite Eight berth. He is the younger brother of Arizona head coach Sean Miller. As a player, Miller was a four-year letterwinner at North Carolina State (1998-2002).
ABOUT DAYTON
» Dayton captured the 2011 Old Spice Classic championship (Orlando, Fla.) over Thanksgiving weekend, posting wins over Wake Forest, Fairfield and Minnesota. The Flyers are 8-4 on the season, and have won three-of their last four games.
» Redshirt junior Kevin Dillard, a native of Flossmoor, Ill., leads the Flyers in scoring, with 12.1 points per game. Dillard ranks third in the Atlantic-10 in assists (5.0), fifth in steals per game (2.3), seventh in free throw percentage (.778) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6).
» Dayton was picked to finish sixth in the A-10 this season in a poll of coaches and media. Senior forward Chris Johnson was a preseason Second Team All-Atlantic 10 pick.
TALTON'S GAME-WINNER LIFTS UIC OVER WIU, 57-56
CHICAGO - The UIC men's basketball has suffered its fair share of heartbreakers in late game situations this season. Over the final 1:55 of the Flames' 57-56 win over Western Illinois Monday night, UIC proved that tough scenarios could be reversed. Junior point guard Gary Taltonsank a driving layup with just 3.8 seconds remaining, helping the Flames erase a late-game eight-point deficit to edge the visiting Leathernecks at the UIC Pavilion.
Talton scored UIC's final seven points -- the game-winning shot was set-up after Talton stole Western Illinois' in-bound pass with just over eight seconds remaining. He came off a high ball screen, sliced to the basket in traffic, and laid the ball off glass to seal the win. UIC trailed 55-47 with 2:25 remaining.
Not to be overshadowed, junior guard Daniel Barnes scored a game-high 22 points, eclipsing his career-high in scoring for the second-straight game. Talton ended the game with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and dished out a season-best six assists. Senior center Darrin Williamschipped in 13 points and corralled seven rebounds.
POSTGAME NOTEBOOK: UIC shot 46.7 percent (21-45) from the field, its second-straight game collectively shooting 45 percent or better ... The Flames held Western Illinois to just a 39.2 percent (20-51) effort from the field, improving to 2-0 this season when holding their opponent under 40 percent shooting ... UIC out-rebounded Western Illinois 34-33, including seven offensive boards ... For the third time in the past four games, UIC had three-of its starters score in double figures ... The Flames out-scored the Leathernecks 26-22 in the paint, 8-4 off turnovers and 9-3 through the fast break ... UIC built a 13-point (30-17) lead with 2:32 remaining in the first half, but saw Western Illinois slice the deficit to just six (32-26) at halftime ... The Leathernecks tied the game (43-43) with 11:20 remaining, and took a 48-45 lead with 9:25 left ... WIU did not trail again until there were just 3.8 seconds remaining, following Gary Talton'sgame-winner.
BARNES DISPLAYING HIS SCORING PUNCH
Junior guard Daniel Barnes, who earned an extra year of eligibility after sitting out last season as a medical redshirt, has emerged as one of the most explosive scorers in the Horizon League. The co-captain from Oak Park, Ill., is averaging 21.0 points per game over the past two contests, and has tallied eight total double-digit scoring outputs. Barnes has also drilled a Horizon League second-best 25 three-pointers (2.3 per game). He has made three or more triples in four individual games this season.
MR. CLUTCH?
Junior point guard Gary Talton, a transfer from Mountain View Community College in Texas, is starting to become UIC's "go-to" player in late-game situations. Talton, who tallied the game-winning basket and scored the Flames' final seven points against Western Illinois (12/19/11), has been particularly efficient in contests that have come down to one two possessions. Talton, who is averaging 9.9 points per game on the season, has scored an average of 12.2 points in UIC's five contests decided by five points or less.
WILLIAMS ATTACKS THE BOARDS
Senior center Darrin Williamsenters Friday's game at Dayton as the Flames' leading rebounder (6.7 rpg), and as of late, has been particularly aggressive on the boards. Over the past five games, Williams is averaging 7.6 rebounds per outing, including three efforts with eight or more rebounds. Williams has also recorded five double-digit scoring outputs on the season, and ranks second in the Horizon League in field goal percentage (.587).
HUMES' OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
Sophomore transfer Hayden Humeshas emerged as one of the top shooters in the Horizon League. The Valparaiso, Ind., native leads the League in three-point field goal percentage (.500) from the power forward position, and is also shooting 74.1 percent from the free throw line. Humes, who has posted a team-best two double-digit rebounding efforts and scored in double figures three times, earned immediate eligibility at UIC this season after Toledo's (his former school) scholarships were reduced due to its Academic Progress Rate.
FLAMES IN SINGLE-POSSESSION DECISIONS
UIC's men's basketball team has seen no shortage of nail biters this season, playing a total of six games decided by five points or less. UIC is just 2-4 in those contests, but as mentioned, had a chance to either tie or win the game with a last-second shot in road games at Green Bay (12/1/11), Milwaukee (12/3/11) and CMU (12/16/11). Additionally, the Flames have held second-half leads in five-of their seven losses this season.
BALANCED ATTACK
Through the first 11 games of the season, UIC has enjoyed a balanced scoring attack. Seven players are averaging at least 6.5 points per game, including four newcomers, and two freshmen. Junior guard Daniel Barnesenters Friday's game at Dayton as the Flames' top scorer, with 11.6 points per outing. Notably, UIC has seen six players lead the Flames in scoring, and five individuals pace the team in rebounding.
CONTROLLING THE GLASS
UIC enters Friday's game against the Flyers as the Horizon League's leader in rebounding margin (+5.0). The Flames have out-rebounded nine-of their 11 opponents this season.
PLENTY OF NEW FACES
The UIC men's basketball team will field the 16th youngest team in the NCAA Division I ranks during the 2011-12 season.
