Griffith, Ind.- The UIC women's tennis team continues their winning ways at home, and stay undefeated at the Match Point Tennis Club in Griffith, In., defeating Northern Illinois without dropping a set, 7-0.
In doubles play, UIC won all three matches, and took the doubles point in convincing fashion. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles team's shutout their opponents, and recorded respective 8-0 pro-set wins. In the No. 3 doubles team, junior Linda Hricistova and freshman Kathryn Sharples shadowed their teammate's performance, and defeated NIU's Martina Schnapp and Sara McLaughlin in a tight one, 8-6.
Freshman Jana Knoppe set the tone early in No. 4 singles play, defeating NIU's McLaughlin in a shutout, 6-0, 6-0. Finishing right behind Knoppe was junior Teona Tsertsvadze, winning her match at the No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Hricistova took care of NIU's Isle Pacheco in No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to secure the win for the Flames.
Junior Mariya Kovaleva defeated NIU's No. 1 singles player, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Sharples battled with NIU's Haley Dekkinga in a close one for the No. 5 singles spot, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Senior Ilinca Cristescu recorded another victory (6-2, 6-0), and that gives her a total of 72 all-time singles wins. Cristescu is 11 behind the all-time leader, Emina Curic, who played for the Flames from 1996-2000.
UIC will continue their home stand, going up against Southern Illinois beginning at noon, and then taking on Chicago State at 3 p.m. CST.
