CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team's bid for a third straight win fell short on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a conference clash to the visiting Loyola Ramblers, 62-47.
The Flames (10-11, 5-5 Horizon League) dug themselves a 15-point hole at the half and were not able to completely recover in the final 20 minutes. UIC shot just 17.6-percent (6-for-34) in the first half and scored 15 points, both of which marked season-lows. The Flames were just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc and they were beat on the glass, 26-19. The Ramblers (10-11, 4-6 Horizon League) shot 44.4-percent (12-for-27) from the field to take a 30-15 lead into the halftime locker room.
UIC had an early 4-2 lead with 17:24 remaining in the opening half, but following a three-pointer by Monica Albano, Loyola grabbed a 5-4 lead, one that they would not relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.
Brittany Boeke led all players with seven points and seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes for the visiting Ramblers.
The Flames appeared to shake off the shooting woes in the second half as they opened the final stanza shooting at an 87.5-percent (seven-for-eight) clip. Unfortunately for the home team, Loyola continued to control the boards and convert inside to keep UIC at bay.
The Flames finished by shooting 31.3-percent (20-for-64) from the field on the afternoon and were outrebounded 47-34 on Saturday.
The Ramblers have now won three straight games over the Flames, including a sweep of the regular season series this year.
Shameia Green led UIC with 12 points, marking the 13th time this season that the guard has posted a double-digit scoring effort. Jasmine Bailey pulled down 13 rebounds, marking her ninth time overall with that achievement this season and fourth straight effort.
Abby Skube led all players with 24 points on Saturday, with 15 coming in the second half. The sophomore also led all players with 14 boards in the game.
The Flames will continue the season-long three-game homestand on Thursday afternoon when they welcome the Green Bay Phoenix to the UIC Pavilion at 4:30 p.m. The women's teams from both schools will play in advance of a Horizon League game between the two men's teams at 7 p.m. Green Bay bested the UIC in the first meeting between the two earlier this season, winning 60-51 at home on Jan. 15.
The homestand wraps up with another doubleheader on Saturday. The men's game will be first at 3 p.m. with the women taking the floor at 5:30 p.m.
