CARBONDALE, Ill. - The UIC softball team would take a 2-1 lead over city foe DePaul early on in Sunday's lid lifter at the Saluki Classic, but were unable to answer back in the third inning, falling 3-2 to the Blue Demons at Charlotte West field on Southern Illinois campus.
The Flames (6-12) will wrap up the weekend invitational component of the 2011 schedule next weekend in California, competing at Sacramento State's Capital Classic Tournament, where UIC will face off against Towson, Santa Clara and the host Hornets beginning on Friday at 12:00 p.m. CST.
Game One: DePaul 3, UIC 2
The Blue Demons, serving as the visitors for the Flames second matchup against their intercity rivals, scored right away in the first, capitalizing off of a leadoff single from Alex Morocco, who advanced to third off a pair of infield sacs and was driven in by the the DP, Katelyn Braget.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Claire Donyanavard, stepping in as a pinch hitter, rocked a bases-clearing double with two on to take a 2-1 lead.
But the Demons answered in the top of the third with one out, converting a pair of singles, a fielder's choice and a pair of infield errors into two runs to regain the lead at 3-2.
DePaul's Kirsten Verdun clamped down on the Flames offensive chances by surrendering only one hit from the third inning on. UIC would strand five runners on base throughout the duration of the morning contest.
Game Two: Southern Illinois 5, UIC 0
After a dominating run-rule performance against the Salukis on Saturday, much like the weather, the Flames offense cooled a little in Sunday's finale against SIU. Melinda Macias would open up the game with a well-smacked single out to left field, but her hit would be the last for the Flames until the seventh.
After stranding a runner at third in both of the first two innings, Southern opened up the game offensively in the third with four consecutive hits, including a RBI triple to score the game's first run.
A pair of errors would assist SIU in tallying three runs total in the third as the Flames would get out of the inning with a bases-loaded forceout to cease any more activity on the scoreboard.
Two more runs would be tacked on in the fourth with a two-run single from catcher Christie Trapani.
UIC would be unable to find a response, not getting a baserunner to second until the seventh inning, when the Flmaes would look to start a rally upon loading the bases with two outs after Shannon Kehr reached on a fielding error.
The final opportunity would rest upon Jacki Fletcher's bat, who would make solid contact with the ball but would not be able to get it over out of the secondbasemens reach, who closed out the game with a force out at second.
