Track and Field to Compete in Purdue's Poehlein Invitational

April 1, 2011

CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's track teams will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday, to compete in the Mike Poehlein Invitational on the campus of Purdue. Action gets underway Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., at Rankin Track and Field.

The Flames will be competing against Louisville, Notre Dame, Ball State, IPFW, host Purdue, Horizon League foes Valparaiso and Butler, and in-state rival DePaul. Limited squads from Illinois and IUPUI will also be on hand.

"After missing out on some opportunities last week, our team is anxious to get some more competition in," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "With Notre Dame, Purdue and Ball State in the field, we'll have plenty of great competition, and are looking forward to coming out of the meet with some good performances."

The Flames competed in just a combined seven events at last weekend's SIU Spring Classic due to inclement weather. On the women's side, junior Andrea Crump finished third in the high jump, leaping 5.32 meters in the final round and collecting six team points. In men's action, sophomore Justin Higginbotham placed fourth in the high jump (1.80 meters), while Matt Kubik (4.01 meters) took fourth in the pole vault.

The Boilermakers have hosted this meet in each of the past five seasons, honoring their former men's head coach who led the squad from 1982 to 2001. Live results of this weekend's meet will be provided by Delta Timing Group.
