INDIANAPOLIS- The UIC men's tennis team took seven out of nine matches from the host Butler, to defeat the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, 6-1.
"With captain {Nate} Kirk out of the singles and doubles lineup, the Flames pulled off a great win," said head coach Hans Neufeld. "Everyone competed well today and it was a great team effort overall today."
UIC (7-12, 4-3 Horizon League) took two out of three and the doubles point from the host Bulldogs. Senior Dave Robare and freshman Alexander Raa took down BU's top doubles duo of Chris Herron and Stephen McLoughlin, 8-5. To secure the doubles point for the Flames was senior Luiz Gonzaga and junior Scott Shepardson defeating BU's Brandon Bayliss and Lenz Teodor in a tight one, 8-7 (9).
Sophomore Gautham Oroskar won his fourth straight singles match over BU's Ben Shafer in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Alan Reifer shadowed his teammate's performance as defeating BU's McLoughlin at the No. 5 slot, 6-1, 6-4. Robare recorded the win for the Flames when he finished off BU's Teodor in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
At the No. 2 singles slot, Gonzaga defeated BU's Herron after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Freshman James Li took on BU's Zach Ervin and defeating his opponent in a fierce battle, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
UIC finished the regular season in Horizon League play behind champions Cleveland State, Green Bay, and Wright State, respectively. The Flames will be traveling back to Indianapolis for the Horizon League Championships held at North Central High School.
