Seven UIC Student-Athletes Named to Academic All-League Teams

April 19, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS - In its ongoing effort to recognize student-athletes for their success in the classroom, the Horizon League office announced the members of the Academic All-League teams for the winter season Tuesday. Seven UIC student-athletes from four sports received the honor.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.

The men's indoor track & field team led the way for the Flames, boasting three student-athletes that were recognized. Wolles Mutai, who carries a flawless 4.0 GPA, led the way, and was joined on the team by both Erik Perez (3.91 GPA) and Matt Morse (3.91). Perez and Morse combined to post four top-five finishes during the Flames' indoor season.

The UIC women's track & field team also had multiple honorees, with junior Aimee Schuh and sophomore Ashley Williams both chalking up Academic All-League plaudits. Schuh carries a 3.47 GPA as a movement science major, while Williams holds a near-perfect 3.92 GPA in the biology curriculum at UIC.

Schuh is one of the top specialists in the Horizon League, and proved so by carding five first-place finishes in the long jump, 60-meter hurdles and 55-meter hurdles during the Flames' indoor campaign. She finished fifth in all three events at the Horizon League Indoor Championships. Williams, UIC's weight throw specialist, recorded four top-10 tallies during the indoor season.

Senior men's swimmer Evan Dunn was also recognized - he holds a 3.57 GPA as a movement science major at UIC. Dunn held UIC's top two times in the 100-yar d breastroke this season, set the school record in the 200 individual medley and was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that set the school standard.

Clair Martin, who set the school record in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke this season, was named to the Horizon League's 15-member Academic All-League team for women's swimming & diving. Martin carries a 3.66 cumulative GPA in the communications program.
