CHICAGO - UIC student-athletes, coaches and staff from all 17 sports congregated at the Student Services Building Tuesday night to celebrate the Flames' academic success at the annual "Night of Champions" Academic Banquet.
The women's swimming team was honored as the Academic Team of the Year after compiling a 3.3 team grade-point-average during the 2010 Fall Semester.
Sophomore gymnast Emily Lawrence and Coryn Schmidt, a sophomore on the softball team, shared the Female Academic Athlete of the Year Award after maintaining perfect 4.0 GPA's. Senior men's tennis player Alex Marginean, who boasts a 3.93 GPA as a biology major, was named the Male Academic Athlete of the Year.
Prestigious scholarship awards, such as the Avery Brundage Scholarship, the Thomas Beckham Scholarship, the Colvin Communication Scholarship, the Don Nash Scholarship, the Port Academic Center Scholarship and the Aileen S. Andrew Scholarship, were presented to deserving UIC student-athletes, and the student-athlete with the highest grade point average on each team was honored.
Avery Brundage award winners were as follows: Lukasz Adamczyk (men's gymnastics), Erin Duggan (women's gymnastics) and Danielle Reusnow (women's gymnastics). Receiving the Port Center Award was Claire Donyanavard (softball); Briana Hinkle from women's basketball accepted the Don Nash Award; Clair Martin, a women's swimmer, earned the Colvin Communication Award; men's gymnast Andre Gatorano and Christine Girard from women's gymnastics accepted the Aileen S. Andrew Award, while Erik Perez (men's track & field) accepted the Thomas Beckham Award.
During the 2010 Fall Semester, UIC student-athletes compiled a 2.97 cumulative grade-point-average, the second-best mark in school history. Nine of the Flames' 17 teams recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, including five programs above a 3.2.
Individually, 136 student-athletes compiled a GPA of 3.0 or better, more than 40 percent of all student-athletes. A total of 32 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, seven Flames' student-athletes from four sports were named to the Horizon League Fall Academic Team.
