NORMAL, Ill. - The UIC men's cross country team claimed third place in the 32-team field, while the women's team placed 11th Friday at the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill.
The men's team totaled 112 points in the contest and were led by senior Brian Denk (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), who concluded the eight-kilometer race in fourth place in 24:46.
"The men turned in some great times, but we need to improve our depth if we are going to perform up to our potential," head coach Jim Knoedel said. "Brian [Denk] got back into the form he showed us last season and Sam [Kehoe] and Angelos [Karkalis] came through with big efforts."
Trailing Denk was Sam Kehoe (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township), who raced to a seventh-place finish in 25:00. Sophomore Angelos Karkalis (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) placed 11th in a 25:06 and senior Tyler Hinckley (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant) claimed 12th place in 25:11.
North Central claimed first place with 48 points, followed by Loyola at 72 points. UIC handily earned third place as Eastern Illinois was the fourth-place finishing team with 149 points.
On the women's side, the squad finished in 11th place in the 28-team field with 293 points.
"Our women turned in great individual performances," Knoedel said. "All of our top seven turned in huge personal records. Jaime's [Johnson] time was 30 seconds faster than last year, so I know we are going to have an exciting year."
Junior Jaime Johnson (River Grove, Ill./East Leyden) led the Flames squad and stopped the clock at 18:23 for a 15th-place finish. Freshman Tess Ehrhardt (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) ran right alongside Johnson and finished in 16th place in 18:24. Freshman Rebecca Zaiter (Elmhurst, Ill./York) rounded out the top three runners for the Flames with a 26th-place finish in 19:01.
Host team, Illinois State claimed the crown with 21 points easily outpacing the rest of the field as Bradley finished second with 103 points. Loyola was the third-place team with 106 points.
The men's and women's cross country teams return to action Sept. 24 at the Forester Invitational in Lake Forest, Ill. The competition begins at 11:00 a.m. CT.
