RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The UIC men's tennis team compiled a 16-8 singles record and 3-3 doubles record Fri., Sept. 16 and Sat., Sept. 17 at the River Forest Invitational in River Forest, Ill. Junior Rahul Kamath (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted a 4-0 singles record during the two-day event.
During the first set of singles matches, sophomore James Li (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) handled Morten Christiansen of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (SIU-E) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Kamath won his first match over Stephen Washuta of SIU-E in consecutive 6-4 sets. Junior Gautham Oroskar (Oak Hill, Illinois/Downers Grove North) defeated Deepak Sabada of Chicago, 6-2, 6-3.
During the second set of singles matches, sophomore Alan Reifer (San Jose, Costa Rica/Dr, Jaim Weizman Institute) earned his first win of the event as he handled Jacob Tanulanond (SIU-Edwardsville), 6-1, 6-2. Kamath and Oroskar both picked up their second victory as Kamath downed Ben Yue of Western Illinois, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9, while Oroskar dropped Jim Capalbo, 6-2, 6-2.
The Flames were undefeated in singles action during the third set of matches. Sophomore Alexander Raa (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes VGS) defeated Troy Brinker (Chicago), 6-4, 6-3. Li played a tough match against Mandela Shepard of Western Illinois, where he dropped the first set 4-6, before winning the second (6-4) and third (11-9) sets.
Reifer downed Mitch Granger (Western Illinois) in consecutive 6-2 sets, while senior Nate Kirk (Wichita, Kan./Wichita-Southeast) earned his first victory of the event in 6-1, 6-1 scores over Maksym Lagutin (Northern Illinois). Kamath and Oroskar continued their winning streak as Kamath defeated Bryant Wei of Northern Illinois in 6-2, 6-1 outcomes, while Oroskar made quick work of Gary Dias (SIU-E) as he won 6-3 in the first set, before blanking Dias 6-0 to win the match.
In the final set of singles matches, Raa downed Marten Jonsson (SIU-E), 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 to compile a 2-2 singles record for the weekend. Li earned a win over Jan Stefanski (Chicago), 6-3, 6-2 to for a 3-1 record, while Kirk handled Devan Faulkenberg of SIU-E, 6-1, 6-0 to pick up a 2-2 record. Kamath remained undefeated during the weekend as the junior downed Ryan Ho (Chicago), 6-3, 6-4.
Moving into doubles action, senior Scott Shepardson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Guilford) and Kirk teamed up for an undefeated doubles weekend as the duo downed Christensen and Faulkenberg of SIU-E in an 8-3 outcome, followed by a victory over Gino Octo and Ben Tue (Western Illinois) in an 8-5 decision. Kamath and freshman Maurizio Feoli (San Jose, Costa Rica, Pan-American) defeated Deepak Sabada and Ryan Ho of Chicago, 8-3.
