EVANSTON, Ill. - The UIC softball team (14-15 overall/2-1 Horizon) collected two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the effort fell short as the Flames were defeated by Northwestern, 7-2, inside Drysdale Field in Evanston, Ill.
Devin Miller started the game for UIC in the circle, before Ashley Hewett stepped into the position in the fifth inning, where she finished out the game throwing 76 total pitches and 39 strikes.
The Flames were outhit by the Wildcats, 7-2, which matched the final score. Jenna Marsalli (.274 batting average) and Courtney Heeley (.294) notched the two hits of the day for UIC, while Heeley added an RBI to her stat line, her sixth of the season.
With a combined 18 runners left on base in the nearly three-hour contest, the Flames had opportunities to score. In the bottom of the second inning, Jacki Fletcher walked, which was followed by a stand-up double to right-center field by Marsalli. With runners on second and third base, Natalie Hernandez hit a line drive at the pitcher, which she caught, and then, picked off second-base runner, Marsalli.
Northwestern collected its first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, before adding two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings.
In a late-game effort, UIC collected two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Flames fell short and dropped to the Wildcats, 7-2.
The Flames return to action Saturday at Noon (CT) with a doubleheader against IUPUI inside Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.
