CHICAGO - With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, Valparaiso walked junior
Courtney Heeley to score junior
Kara Komp and give UIC a 1-0 win Sunday at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill., to win the series 2-1.
"It was a great game for us," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "Ashley (Hewett) did a tremendous job for us, and our offense kept putting the pressure on throughout the game. I am very pleased with how we played, and we look to take this momentum into our Green Bay series."
Senior Ashley Hewett pitched nine innings for the Flames Sunday. She threw five strikeouts, and gave up four hits with no runs. During the weekend series, Hewett went 1-1, pitched 16.1 innings and blanked 11 batters.
In the three games, the Flames totaled nine RBI, with Heeley earning five on her own, with her grand slam from the second game of the series. Juniors Melissa Preish, Kara Komp, Coryn Schmit and senior Melinda Macias also chipped in RBI.
In Sunday's contest, a defensively heavy game as the sole run of the game was scored in the bottom of the ninth inning, Komp led off the inning, where the left-hander singled with a hard bit ball to second base. Komp then stole second base, while Preish was intentionally walked. With runners on first and second, Aguilar reached first. Heeley walked to post an RBI and the Flames won the game 1-0.
